Onshape: Cloud-Native CAD for Modern Teams.
Likeliness to Recommend
What differentiates Onshape from other similar products?
Onshape differentiators: Cloud-native: runs in a browser, no installs or upgrades. Real-time collaboration: multiple users edit simultaneously (like Google Docs). No files: built-in version control and data management, no PDM needed. Cross-platform: works on any device, anywhere. Secure: centralized cloud storage with granular access control. In short, Onshape combines CAD + PDM + collaboration in one cloud platform.
What is your favorite aspect of this product?
If I had to pick one, I’d say the built-in data management is the most powerful aspect. Unlike traditional CAD where you juggle files, revisions, and a separate PDM system, Onshape handles all of that automatically in the cloud. You can branch, merge, roll back, or collaborate in real time without ever worrying about overwriting work or losing track of versions. It frees engineers from “file chaos” so they can just focus on designing.
What do you dislike most about this product?
The main drawback is that Onshape relies completely on internet connectivity. If your connection is slow or drops, performance suffers—unlike desktop CAD that can run offline. Some users also mention: Limited offline functionality (basically none). Performance on very large assemblies can lag compared to high-end workstation CAD. Certain advanced features (e.g., high-end simulation, CAM) aren’t as mature as in older, established platforms. So, my biggest dislike would be the dependence on a stable, fast internet connection.
What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?
Recommendations for someone considering Onshape: Make sure you have a stable internet connection (it’s 100% cloud-based). Use a modern browser + decent hardware (8–16 GB RAM, discrete graphics if possible). Keep Documents organized; don’t overload with too many tabs. Use versions and references for clean data management. Take advantage of real-time collaboration instead of exporting files. Check plan limitations (free plans may force public Documents). Great for teams and collaboration, but less ideal if you need offline access or handle very large assemblies.
